How Do You Get Toenail Fungus?

Toenail fungus is an infection of the toenails that disfigures the toenails, turning them yellow, full of white blotches or streaks, or even thick and crumbly.  It can be unpleasant to look at and experience and painful if it goes on long enough.  So how do you get toenail fungus?

Toenail fungus invades your toenails through injuries around your toes, toenails and nail bed. Any toenail tears, cracks or cuts in the toes can allow the fungus to get in and start making your toenails ugly. These fungi, which are related to the ones that give people athlete’s foot, yeast infections and ringworm, are contagious and can live on surfaces outside the human body.  So if you are asking “how do you get toenail fungus” and “how can I avoid toenail fungus?”, here are some suggestions.

Be careful with the nail lacquer. If you like wearing toenail polish, don’t let layers of polish build up on your toenails and make sure you give your toenails occasional nail lacquer vacations to breathe and allow your nail beds to stay healthy.  Dark colored nail lacquer can sometimes yellow toenails. Don’t confuse this with toenail fungus. The nail lacquer does not give you toenail fungus, it just makes your toes a more friendly place for toenail fungus to grow.

Wear shower shoes. When you’re at the gym or other places with wet floors or communal showers, wear shower shoes to protect your feet from toenail fungus. Picking up toenail fungus from public showers is one of the easiest ways to get infected. Be sure to clean and dry your feet and toes really well after swimming, gym and the like.

Avoid tight, sweaty shoes. If you must wear snug shoes for a sport or for a fancy dress occasion, wear moisture wicking socks or use foot powder to help keep the feet and toes dry. With some vigilance and care of your feet, you may never have to ask “how do you get toenail fungus!”
