Fingernail Toenail Fungus

Are you worried about fingernail toenail fungus? Perhaps you or someone you love has this fungus growing underneath the nails of your fingers or toes. If you do, you might be worried about if it is dangerous and also how to get rid of it.

The good news is that nail fungus is not dangerous. It won’t make your toes fall off and the fungus won’t crawl up your body. However, you are still advised to get rid of it because it can cause pain if untreated. Nail fungus can sometimes smell, which is embarrassing for most people. Fingernail toenail fungus is always ugly, as it causes the nails to turn yellow, harden and crumble at the edges. For appearance reasons alone, most people want to remove the fungus as soon as possible.

Fingernail and toenail fungus is difficult to treat, but not impossible. There are several over the counter topical ointments that can be applied. Your doctor can also prescribe you an oral anti-fungal medication. No matter what medication you take, make sure you follow directions. Generally, you will have to take the medications for six to twelve weeks.

During that time, be careful that you do not get athlete’s foot or any other fungal infection. If you take showers in a gym or dorm, wear sandals even if you know the area is sanitized. Also, after you bathe you should thoroughly dry your feet and toes, as well as your hands if you have fungus under your fingernails. Don’t wear wet clothes for a long period of time, either, especially wet socks or gloves. Doing so can give the fungus a place to thrive.

There is also an anti-fungal nail lacquer that might help you fight a mild case of fingernail toenail fungus. Your doctor can prescribe this lacquer and instruct you on how to use it. Follow all directions and contact your doctor if you have any questions.
