Toenail Fungus Laser Treatments

Often nails get discoloured due to fungal infection which affects persons like athletes, swimmers since they may be barefooted or have wet feet most of the time, while some may be genetically prone to it. Over the time, the fungus may grow and one may face pain and difficulty while walking.

Doctors nowadays sometimes suggest Toenail Fungus Laser Treatments as an option as new substitute to oral medication which pose a danger of liver damage. However, both the methods take around a year for the nails to clear it entirely.

Here’s how toenail fungus laser treatments works:

A directed focused light source is applied on to the infected toenail and the toenail matrix. The laser destroys fungal growth. It is important to ensure the specific wavelength for the laser in order to target only the living fungi.

Cost of toenail fungus laser treatments: Cost depends on the severity of the fungal infection and the number of treatments required (maybe from one to four), which is determined by the physician. It may range from $750 to $1,500 and it is usually not covered by insurance. Treatments may usually take from 30 to 45 minutes for maybe10 toes

Types of Toenail Fungus Laser Treatments- It depend on the wavelengths of laser light used in the treatment as follows:
•1064nm NdYAG (neodymium-doped yttrium aluminium garnet) laser: this treatment uses laser diodes of flash lamps and produces the light passing photons through a crystal of yttrium aluminium garnet which is neodymium doped, hence the name as such. The wavelength may be as 940, 1120, 1320 or 1440 nm.
•940nm near infrared light
•660nm red visible light

Generally, there are no restriction , neither ill-effects on use of toenail fungus laser treatments, however one needs to follow a hygiene routine like keeping feet clean and dry, using anti-fungal spray for feet and shoes, changing socks daily and not going barefoot in order to prevent fungus recurrence.
